BERLIN — Former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly enjoyed the best evening of his post-national-team career after watching Jürgen Klopp's Germany lose 0–1 to Greece.
Sources close to Nagelsmann say the former coach initially watched the match "professionally," taking notes and maintaining a neutral expression.
This lasted approximately eleven minutes.
By halftime, Nagelsmann was allegedly smiling.
By the final whistle, he was standing on the sofa.
"Nothing personal," he reportedly told nobody in particular.
"Football is just like that."
The defeat marked Klopp's first home match in charge of Germany, and Greece's first-ever victory over the Germans.
Nagelsmann is said to have immediately unblocked Klopp on WhatsApp.
Not to congratulate him.
He explained:
A night of celebration
According to people familiar with the celebrations, Nagelsmann ordered champagne, pizza and a commemorative cake bearing the words:
WELCOME TO THE JOB, JÜRGEN
Underneath, in smaller lettering:
NOW YOU KNOW.
He reportedly then spent several minutes scrolling through old photographs from his time in charge of Germany.
"Look at that," he said, pointing at a picture of himself standing beside the national team.
"Those were the days."
A friend allegedly reminded him that Germany had also suffered some disappointing results under his management.
Nagelsmann reportedly asked the friend to leave.
"I never said it was easy"
Nagelsmann later issued a statement expressing his "full support" for Klopp.
"I know exactly how difficult the job is," he said.
"I know what it feels like when everyone expects Germany to win every game."
He paused.
"And then Greece scores."
The former coach is also believed to have changed his phone wallpaper from a picture of the German national team to the final score:
GERMANY 0 — GREECE 1
When asked whether he felt vindicated by the result, Nagelsmann rejected the suggestion.
"Absolutely not."
He then reportedly changed his WhatsApp status to:
Told you.
Klopp remains calm
Klopp, meanwhile, urged supporters not to panic.
"It's one game," he said.
Nagelsmann reportedly applauded.
"Exactly," he whispered.
"Just one game."
Sources say he then booked a second bottle of champagne.
